What does a classic car restoration cost?

There is no headline figure worth printing, because a restoration is hours multiplied by an hourly rate, and the hours are unknown until the paint comes off and the car is on a lift. Corrosion is the great unknown; the standard you are aiming for is the great multiplier. The honest starting point is that a full restoration routinely costs more than the finished car is worth, and that is a perfectly reasonable thing to do with your money as long as you decide it deliberately. Tell us about the car and restorers will talk to you directly.

Marque and year drive parts availability, which is one of the biggest cost factors.

We publish no restoration totals or marque-specific figures because no reliable public price data exists for this work.

What drives a classic restoration quote, 2026

Restoration is one of the few jobs where a fixed price is close to meaningless, because nobody knows how much metal is left until the paint and the underseal come off. What can be set out honestly is the list of things that decide the hours, and hours are what you are buying. Read it before you ask anyone for a number, and again before you accept one.

This is a cost driver table, not a price table. Each row is a factor UK classic car restorers price against, with the question that makes competing quotes comparable. We publish no totals, no per-marque figures and no value uplift percentages, because there is no reliable public price data for restoration work and every car is a different quantity of hidden corrosion. The vehicle tax and MOT points referenced on this site are taken from gov.uk guidance checked on 14 August 2026. Get real quotes for your own car through the form above.

What drives a classic restoration quote, 2026
Cost driverWhy it moves the priceWhat to ask the restorer for
Body and structural corrosionThe dominant unknown, and the reason restoration budgets move. Sills, floors, chassis rails, box sections, spring hangers, A posts and inner wings can look sound under paint and filler and be gone underneath. Fabricating and letting in new metal properly is slow, skilled work.A staged assessment: strip, blast or dip, then a photographed report and a revised estimate before any metalwork is authorised
The standard you are aiming forThe biggest multiplier of all. A sound, honest driver, a rolling restoration done in stages, a full nut and bolt rebuild, and a concours car judged on the underside of the boot floor are four different projects on the same vehicle, and the hours between the first and the last are not close.A written definition of the target standard, agreed before work starts, in plain terms both sides understand
Paint preparation hoursPaint cost is preparation cost. Stripping, repairing, filling, blocking, priming, flatting and repeating until the panels are flat is where the hours go, and it is what separates a shiny respray from a finish that still looks right in five years. Colour changes, multi-stage finishes and bare metal work all add more. How many stages of prep and flatting are included, and whether the price assumes a bare metal strip
Chrome, brightwork and trimSpecialist work, mostly subcontracted, and typically the longest lead times on the whole project. Re-chroming means stripping, repairing the base metal, copper, nickel and chrome; bumpers and grilles are slow. Trim and upholstery is hand work, and materials for period-correct finishes are not cheap.Which items are going out to specialists, their lead times, and whether those costs are inside the quote
Parts scarcity for the marqueSome cars are supported by a thriving remanufactured parts market and a club that reproduces panels. Others need parts found at autojumbles, sourced abroad, or fabricated one at a time. Two identical-looking projects on different marques can differ enormously for this reason alone.Which parts are readily available, which are being hunted, and which will have to be made
Hourly rate and hoursRestoration is sold by the hour, and the total is set by the hours. Rates differ by region and by workshop, and a marque specialist who has done this model twenty times may take far fewer hours than a cheaper generalist learning it on your car.The hourly rate, an estimate of hours by phase, and a monthly statement of hours actually booked
Mechanical and electrical scopeEngine, gearbox, axle, brakes, steering, fuel system and a full rewire are each substantial jobs in their own right. Deciding which are in scope, and which are deferred to a later phase, is the main lever most owners have over the total.Scope split into phases, with each phase separately priced so you can stop between them
Storage, transport and project lengthRestorations run for months and often years. Storage may be charged, the car has to get there and back, and a long project accumulates cost even in quiet periods. Long projects also outlive price lists, so materials and subcontract costs move.Whether storage is charged, and how price changes over a long project are handled
  • A classic car restoration is priced in hours, not as a fixed job: the largest single unknown is structural corrosion, which cannot be assessed until paint, underseal and trim are removed.
  • The cost of a full restoration routinely exceeds the market value of the finished car, so the decision to restore should be made on what the car is worth to its owner rather than as an investment.
  • Gov.uk states that a vehicle does not need an MOT if it was built or first registered more than 40 years ago and no substantial changes have been made to it, for example replacing the chassis, body, axles or engine to change the way the vehicle works. The owner must still keep it in a roadworthy condition (gov.uk, checked 14 August 2026).

Straight answers

How much does a classic car restoration cost in the UK?

There is no meaningful headline figure. Restoration is sold by the hour, and the hours are set by how much structural corrosion is found, the standard you are aiming for, how much paint preparation is involved, and whether parts for your marque are available or have to be made. Get the car assessed, then get staged estimates from restorers who know it.

Is restoring a classic car worth it financially?

Usually not, and that is worth knowing before you start. A full restoration routinely costs more than the finished car is worth on the open market. People restore cars because they want that particular car, because of its history, or because they enjoy the process. All are good reasons. Expecting to profit is not.

What is the most expensive part of a classic car restoration?

Usually bodywork and paint, because corrosion repair is slow skilled hand work and paint cost is mostly preparation hours. Chrome and trim are the most common cause of schedule delay rather than the largest cost, and the standard you are aiming for multiplies everything.

What is the difference between a driver-standard and a concours restoration?

Driver standard means a sound, safe, presentable car built to be used, with finish judged at a normal viewing distance. Concours means built to be judged, including areas nobody normally sees, with correctness of every detail assessed. On the same car those are two very different quantities of hours, which is why the target standard should be agreed in writing before anything starts.

Why will a restorer not give me a fixed price?

Because nobody can see how much corrosion is hidden under paint, filler and underseal. A fixed price for unknown work either carries heavy contingency or fails partway through. The honest structure is a staged estimate: strip and assess, a photographed report, a revised estimate, then the work in separately priced phases.

Does my classic need an MOT and vehicle tax?

Gov.uk states that a vehicle does not need an MOT if it was built or first registered more than 40 years ago and no substantial changes have been made to it, and that a vehicle built before 1 January 1986 can stop paying vehicle tax from 1 April 2026, with an equivalent rule for vehicles registered before 8 January 1986 where the build date is unknown. You must apply for the tax exemption; the MOT exemption needs no application but the vehicle must still be kept roadworthy.

Is this quote service really free?

Yes, free to you and with no obligation to accept any quote. We pass your details only to classic car restorers covering your area, who contact you directly. We may receive a fee from those providers, which is how the service is funded.
